False Normalization of Ankle Brachial Index: A Case of Lower Extremity Peripheral Arterial Disease with Normal Ankle-Brachial Index
نویسندگان
چکیده
Screening for lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is essential in assessing a patient’s risk of cerebrovascular disorders. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) widely used as screening tool PAD, but it can produce falsely normalized results due to factors like artery calcification and collateral vessels. We report patient with normal ABI confirmed PAD through ultrasound computed tomography (CT). This case shows the limitation diagnosis. Additional tests, such CT or ultrasound, should be considered when suspected, even if normal.

Ankle-brachial index and peripheral arterial disease.
Patients with peripheral arterial disease including those with intermittent claudication have a high risk for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular morbidity and mortality. The outcome of patients with intermittent claudication is less limited by local complications in the leg than by the systemic complications of coronary and cerebral vessels. About 30 % of these patients will die within 5 years,...
متن کاملAnkle-brachial Index, Peripheral Arterial Disease, and Diabetic Retinopathy
We read with interest the article by Yun et al. [1], who reported that the frequency of diabetic retinopathy was associated with the presence of arterial stiffness as measured by the brachial ankle pulse wave velocity, but not with common carotid artery intima-media thickness, carotid plaque, or peripheral arterial disease (PAD), in a Korean sample of type 2 diabetic patients. They suggested th...

Dear Editor, We have read the article ‘‘Ankle-brachial index as a predictor of coronary disease events in elderly patients submitted to coronary angiography’’ by Eduardo D. E. Papa et al. (1). These authors aimed to evaluate the value of the ankle-brachial index (ABI) as a marker of cardiovascular events in elderly patients and to evaluate the relationship between the ABI and the extent of coro...
متن کاملAnkle/brachial index to everyone
BACKGROUND In the last years significant attention has been paid in identifying markers of subclinical atherosclerosis or of increased cardiovascular risk. METHOD An abnormal ankle/brachial index (ABI) identifies patients affected by lower extremity peripheral arterial disease, and even more important, represents a powerful predictor of the development of future ischemic cardiovascular events...
